Topic: Student Learning

Kilmer 4th and 3/4/5 teachers and students were recognized by the District 21 School Board on Thursday for their fundraising efforts to support the victims of Hurricane Harvey last month.

After learning of the devastation in Houston following Hurricane Harvey, the students expressed their desire to make a difference in the lives of students living in that region.  As a result, they are hosting a fundraiser to support Houston schools that were damaged by flooding. They raised more than $3000 to send to Houston teachers to purchase supplies for student learning.

This service learning project connects to both the Social Emotional goals of District 21 and critical content in the science and social studies curriculum in addition to the Kilmer yearlong theme of “Be The Change.”  Students learned about empathy and spreading kindness as they make a difference in the lives of others. They also studied natural disasters and how to reduce the impact of natural Earth processes on humans as well as how challenges motivate people.

The fundraiser was held from September 11th to September 18th. All Kilmer students were able to participate by bringing some change to “Be The Change.”
