Kilmer students inspired to Be The Change

September 9, 2017

Topic: Student Learning

After learning of the devastation in Houston following Hurricane Harvey, Kilmer fourth grade students expressed their desire to make a difference in the lives of students living in that region.  As a result, they are hosting a fundraiser to support Houston schools that were damaged by flooding. The money collected will be sent to Houston teachers to purchase supplies for student learning.

This service learning project connects to both the Social Emotional goals of District 21 and critical content in the science and social studies curriculum in addition to the Kilmer yearlong theme of “Be The Change.”  Students will learn about empathy and spreading kindness as they make a difference in the lives of others. They will also study natural disasters and how to reduce the impact of natural Earth processes on humans as well as discussing how challenges motivate people.

The fundraiser will be held from September 11th to September 18th. All Kilmer students can participate by bringing some change to “Be The Change.”
